Introduction
To manage the Turnarounds, Workouts & Restructuring team with the view of maximising recoveries and minimising losses. Furthermore, coordinate the prevention of financial and business failure from defaulting and or financially underperforming and distressed clients.
Job description

Workouts
  • Ensure optimal solutions are provided to NEF clients experiencing financial difficulty. 
  • Provide input and guidance with regards to transactional matters on restructuring, turnaround, workout, litigation, monitoring and exit. 
  • Ensure that restructured clients are effectively managed in order to ensure success of a turnaround and maximize the return on investment. 
  • Interact with other business units, to ensure thorough portfolio management, adequacy of reserves and proper risk ratings are allocated. 
  • Interact with external stakeholders’ e.g. financial advisors, lawyers to evaluate workouts situations and to craft and deploy recovery strategies. 
  • Work closely with Post Investment and Legal Services Departments to timeously institute legal action and speedy settlement on litigation matters. 
  • Preparing various periodic reports for presentation at PMC, EXCO IC Board IC and Board. 
  • Utilise own and expert knowledge, experience, and best practices to guide the team in the fulfilment of its roles. 
  • Review the necessary reports to senior management, various committees and Board. 
  • Manage a portfolio of distressed transactions. 
Turnarounds
  • Devise plans for turnaround of delinquent / distressed businesses and ensure investees implement same. 
  • Prepare formal credit write-ups and present transactions for approval within organisational standards.
  • Negotiate resolution strategies with borrowers, vendors and other interested parties. Work closely with legal counsel in structuring and negotiating business rescue, turnaround and restructure transactions. 
  • Interact with CEO/CFO levels in investee companies. 
  • Ensure compliance with all reporting and regulatory requirements. 
  • Provide risk assessment of transactions. 
Financial Management
  • Prepare budget and the control of expenses within budget limits and company policy directives. 
  • Ensure compliance and adherence to NEF financial policies. 
Risk Management
  • Ensure that early warnings signs and other key risks factors are proactively identified by the team. 
  • Continually manage portfolio such that onerous exposure to single clients is not experienced. 
  • Follow up and implement recommendations of internal and external audit findings.
  • Ensure all weaknesses in system are identified and necessary remedial or risk mitigation measures are put in place. 
  • Aware of the possibilities and consequences that could have an adverse effect on NEF’s financing portfolio due to unforeseen event(s). 
Strategic Planning
  • Annually prepare, finalise, procure approval and implement a strategy for the Department. 
  • Ensure staff buy-in into strategy. 
  • Drive strategic thinking and direction in the Department. 
  • Develop appropriate strategies to resolve distressed transactions. 
People Management
  • Ensure that the department is adequately staffed with suitably qualified specialist and support staff. 
  • Compile job descriptions for the team and ensure they are fully conversant with the content thereof. 
  • Manage staff performance continuously to ensure maximum productivity and healthy staff morale. 
  • Initiate personal development programmes for staff, where relevant, or as may be required from time to time. 
  • Conduct annual and bi-annual performance reviews for all staff. 
  • Conduct regular planning sessions and progress meetings with staff to ensure proper control and dissemination of information and coordination of activities.

Minimum requirements

Qualification Requirements
  • Honours degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent 
  • CA(SA) or BCom (Hons) or MBA degree advantageous 
  • TMA membership advantageous
 
Experience / Skills Required
  • Minimum of 5 years managerial experience in a Workouts or Post Investments is required. 
  • At least 3 years’ experience in restructuring / turnaround and business rescue. 
  • Credit experience is essential, including deal structuring, analysing financial statements and credit assessment.
  • Strong numerical skills and financial acumen to analyse, evaluate and identify trends in complex consolidated financial statements, balance sheets and ratios 
  • Understanding or exposure to different business sectors 
  • Knowledge of Chapter 6 of Companies Act of 2011 and other relevant similar legislation 
  • Ability to build and analyse financial models, financials and sensitivity analyses 
  • Ability to understand and recognize the key operational performance drivers of a business 
  • Creating valuation models utilized in divestitures and acquisitions of distressed assets 
  • Developing spreadsheet models used to analyse complex financing transactions 
  • Analysing economic and industry trends and data to develop recommendations 
  • Reading and analysing complex legal documents and discussing issues with deal constituents in order to develop a deep understanding of a given transaction 
  • Ability to multitask different aspects of a project while adhering to applicable deadlines
